Training at Willow Oak Farm Riding School

Training of the Horse

Our goal is for the horse to be safe, soft and confident. WOF offers full training board for our horses in training.

Colt starting (2 to 5 years) - Starting the young horse usually lasts one month. The horse is started in ground work, bridless and in the snaffle bit under saddle. During his first month, the young horse will learn all his basic training and walk, trot and canter in balance in the round pen, the ring, the dressage arena and out in the fields. All work during this month is done on a loose rein.

Five years and up - Continuing the horse training in dressage and/or jumping. Putting the horse in the show horse or giving confidence to a pleasure horse on the trails. The training will always start in the roundpen through groundwork but lungeing will also be used as well as cavaletti work.

Retraining the older horse - Any age will apply. The training will start in the roundpen to pinpoint any problem and to apply a good training program for the older horse to regain his confidence and fitness.

“Understanding a horse is something of an art…….What a person has in mind to present to the horse needs to be something that’s possible for a horse to actually do. Then the person has to be able to understand it themselves, through feel, and apply it in a way that the horse can understand.”
Bill Dorrance (Legendary Equestrian Master) Excerpts from True Horsemanship through Feel

Training of the Rider

Training at Willow Oak Farm Riding School

All our beginner riders, youth or adults, are started in a Western saddle with a handler by their side. The Western saddle provides stability and safety for the beginner rider who will not be inclined to pull on the reins while learning to balance himself/herself on the horse. The beginner rider will be taught on a trained school horse. Riding in the English saddle will happen when the rider is balanced at all three gaits.

All students learn to lead, groom and tack up their horse. We allow plenty of time for each lesson so each student learn at his/her own pace. An instructor will be with the beginner at all times while learning to groom and tack up.
